How to Avoid Making a Guy Feel Awkward

Whether you're taking your first tentative steps in a relationship, or you are just beginning to feel a guy out to see if he has some potential, you need to remember not to make him feel awkward!  You may not know it, but you're probably more intimidating than you think, so go easy on the guy who has enough guts to talk to you.  There are quite a few things you can do to make a guy feel less awkward around you, so just keep them in mind.

Smile!  A natural smile, one that is at ease and not forced, is a terrific tool towards winning a guy over and helping him drop his guard.  Don't bother with a smile if it's not genuine.  False smiles are uncomfortable at best and insulting at worst, so only smile if you mean it.

Keep the conversation moving!  Work to make the conversation move forward.  Everyone can get a bit shy getting a conversation started, and you won't be helping things if you let him do all the work.  One thing to keep in mind is that just because you don't have something in common at first doesn't mean you can't find anything.  Do your views on books match?  What about movies?  Find something to chat about where you can both get carried away.

Keep your body language in mind!  If you are turned away from the guy, curled up or not even looking at him, these are all indications that you would prefer it if he just went away.  Unless you really do want him to go away, this is a poor attitude to take, so turn towards him, give him your full attention and look him in the eye.

Ask questions!  This is a great way to make people feel more comfortable about themselves and incidentally give you a chance to get to know your prospective guy a little bit better.  Be inquisitive about his job and his family.  If he questions you in return, you'll be able to tell that he can be a thoughtful listener.  See if you can find a topic that you both like to discuss and watch your conversation take off from there.

Be decisive!  If he asks you to go out or if he can call you, give him a definite yes or no.  This will ease his mind and show him that you're a person who can make decisions.  Guys like to think in absolutes, so the fewer maybes you give him, the more comfortable he will be.
